Dave is a Cumberland, Wisconsin native who grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota. He played professional hockey for 10 years (NHL, WHA, AHL, IHL, CHL, SHL, NAHAL) before retiring in 1984 to become General Manager of the Gore Mountain Ski Area in upstate New York. After 7 years in the ski business, Dave returned to professional hockey as the General Manger of the New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils top minor league hockey clubs in Albany, NY. From there, he moved to Pittsburgh to accept the General Manger's position for the Pittsburgh Penguins new training facility. In 1997, Dave was hired to manage the Island Sports Center where he helped open its doors to the public in 1998.

Dave also appeared in the 1977 feature film classic Slap Shot, with legendary actor Paul Newman, staring as Jack Hanson, one of the hockey playing Hanson Brothers. He later appeared as Jack Hanson in the 2002 movie Slap Shot 2: Breaking the Ice, a film where he and his two fictitious brothers won Best Supporting Actor awards for a DVD Premiere. This was followed by his portrayal again as a Hanson Brother in Slap Shot 3: The Junior League, with iconic comedian actor Leslie Nielson.

Dave's wife is from Nanty Glo, PA and they have two daughters, a son and two granddaughters who reside in the Pittsburgh and State College area.
